Fry Communications has been working with the Central Laser Facility (CLF) to develop a series of impact case studies, focused on the role of UK research infrastructure in supporting industrial innovation.

The brief was straightforward: To create a set of accessible summaries for use in print, web and social media that could speak to senior stakeholders in government, funding bodies, and prospective industry users, while still doing justice to the underlying science.

Facilities like the CLF are some of the UK’s most valuable public assets. They enable researchers to tackle complex, high-impact challenges using world-leading equipment. But for many SMEs, access to these laboratores, and the funding routes that support them, isn’t always visible or well understood. These case studies were designed to help demonstrate the value of maintaining the UK's R&D innovation pipelines, and bridge that gap.

My approach begins with structured technical interviews with the individual research teams, drawing out both the scientific challenge and the wider societal context behind the work. My goal isn't to simplify the science, but to translate it, maintaining scientific accuracy while shaping narratives that makes the impact clear to non-specialist decision-makers.

Alongside creating ten completed case studies, this work has helped clear an internal backlog of content, enabling the CLF team to better showcase the breadth and impact of their industrial partnerships. The programme is now continuing, with further case studies in development.

For research organisations and technical teams, crafting clear, narratives is often the difference between being understood and being overlooked. It’s also where a significant amount of internal time can be lost.

If you’re looking to better articulate the value of your work, whether for funding, partnerships or wider visibility, I can help turn technical outputs into content that builds confidence with the audiences that matter.
